House Bill 2220 - What to know

Jun 21, 2019, 07:00 AM

Oregon is the first state in the nation that allows dentists to administer any vaccine available at a primary care office. This includes flu shots and MMR and HPV vaccines.

Seventy percent of oropharyngeal cancers in the US are caused by HPV. Beginning in 2020, dentists’ scope will expand to provide vaccines as an integrated effort to decrease the incidence of these, as well as other preventable diseases.

The Oregon Board of Dentistry is working with the Oregon Health Authority, Oregon Health Sciences University, and Oregon Dental Association to develop protocols and training rules. Dentists will be held to requirements for prescribing, administering and reporting vaccines in alignment with rules established for pharmacists and primary care providers.

We look forward to supporting our dental network with this ground-breaking integration initiative, and will provide updates on new policies and OHP rules regarding this expanded scope of practice as they develop.
